Cpl Banton was born in London, England and was a machinist. He was 21 years old when he was selected for service in South Africa with the First Contingent (2nd Special Service Battalion The Royal Canadian Regiment). He transferred from the 48th Highlanders on 21 Oct 1899.

Born in 1892 in Stafford, England. When he attested into to 15th Battalion on September 19, 1914 as a Corporal, he had served 5 years in the 48th Regiment Highlanders. He listed his occupation as chemist. He was taken prisoner at 2nd Ypres on 24 April 1915.
