Pte Miller, Carl Sidney, was born in Toronto. He and his family had moved to Jamaica before the war and he came back to Canada in 1942 to enlist. He received the service number D136964 and was sent overseas in 1943. Pte Miller joined the 1st Battalion, 48th Highlanders on 27 May 1944 from the X-4 List 48th Highrs (4Bn) [48th soldiers available for reinforcement. The battalion at that time was at rest at Piedmonte d’Alife, recovering from their single-handed breaching of the Adolph Hitler Line at Pontecorvo, the first breach by any Canadian Unit. Miller had been in hospital, being discharged from 1 CCD on 16 May. Battalion records of June show him being awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with clasp, dated 3 March. Miller remained with the battalion for some time until possibly wounded a second time. (research required.)
Pt 2 Orders to the War Diary of January 1945 show Pte Miller being taken on strength of the X-3 List (Highlanders in hospital) from the X-9 List on 17 January 1945. The X-9 List records soldiers “held at Base Reinforcement Units who are not available as reinforcements and whose disposition is yet to be decided”. This suggests that Miller had been wounded and was not fit to return to active duty. His daughter states that he had been wounded twice in 1944 and medically discharged in 1945.
