Pte Miller, C. S. enlisted at No. 1 Depot in Windsor, Ontario and was assigned the service number A116473. He is recorded in Pt 2 Orders as taken on strength by the 1st Battalion, 48th Highlanders on 24 December 1943, from the 48th Highrs X-4 List (Highlanders available for reinforcement). At that time the battalion was preparing to penetrate through the German lines, west of Ortona, with the goal of threatening the only roads to the north and in and out of Ortona that the Germans could use to reinforce or withdraw. On 23 December, the battalion went at night, in the rain, in single file over two miles through the German lines, undetected, and set up an all-round defence near the town of San Tommaso. After defeating all German attempts to dislodge them, the battalion assaulted San Tommaso, as the Germans began their withdrawal from Ortona.
On 1 January 1945, Miller is recorded as being posted from the X-3 list (Highlanders in hospital) to the Highlanders’ X-4 List (available for reinforcement). He remained on the X-4 List until taken on strength by the 1st Battalion “w.e.f. 15 April 45”, when the battalion was advancing from the town of Twello, as the second phase of Operation Cannonshot, the liberation of Apeldoorn in The Netherlands. He remained with the battalion to the end of the war and was promoted to L/Cpl and departed NWE (North West Europe) with the battalion on 4 September 45 to the UK the next day, as the battalion prepared to come home to Canada. The Sailing list gave his home address (or NOK) as Mrs. G. Schram, 6 Jeffrey Street, Chatham, Ontario.
