Presentation of First Colours By Lord Stanley – 1892

A 15 inch (38.1 cm) by 28 inch (71.12 cm) black and white photography of the Presentation of First Colours. The 48″ Highlanders of Canada’s first Stand of Colours was presented on May 24, 1892. on the campus grounds of the University of Toronto. These colours, donated by the Ladies of Toronto, were presented by His Excellency, Lord Stanley of Preston, the Governor General of Canada. The Colours served the Regiment for 33 years.

During this time they were paraded and trooped before the public numerous times, but the most significant of these was the march out of Germany in December of 1918. Upon their return home from Germany, the tops of the colour standards were adorned with a set of Brass Laurels presented by the 48″ Highlanders Chapter, IODE.
This first Stand of Colours was retired in May 1925, laid up in St. Andrew’s Church in May 1927 and now reside in the Museum. Inscribed on these Colours were ten of the 21 Battle Honours awarded the Regiment for service in The Great War.
