Gold pocket watch in custom box, presented to CSM W.A. Hawkins by the Canada Club for "Bisley 1923".

CSM W. A. Hawkins – Bisley 1923 Gold Pocket Watch

A gold metal pocket watch belonging to CSM William Andrew Hawkins, with gold long chain attached to top of watch via the bow. At end of chain is a similar gold small round metal bar. Pocket watch is inside of a rectangular box made of cardboard and bound in navy-blue leather.

The pocket watch face has a small transparent glass window in the centre with two black metal bars, the hour and minute hands, visible through the glass. Around the window are painted in black roman numerals reading from one to twelve and two black circle frame borders running around the window above and below the roman numerals. The bottom lower border near to the window also has sets of then and wide black perpendicular lines, with one wide one under each roman numeral and four thin ones between each wide ones, likely denoting the minutes, while the roman numerals are the hours. The crown at the top of the watch is ridged and can be rotated both clockwise and counterclockwise. The back of the pocket watch has at the top an engraving of a beaver on a bar and below it are two branches with four maple leaves each pointed out leftwards and rightwards respectively. Below these images are engraved the text: “PRESENTED BY THE   CANADA CLUB   BISLEY 1923.   WON BY   SERGT.MAJ.W.A.HAWKINS G.M.   48TH HIGHLANDERS   TORONTO”.

The front face of the pocket can be opened and the inside face is a white paper circle with black printed roman numerals running around the edge of the watch face, going from one to twelve but skipping six. In the position of where the roman numeral six would be is a smaller printed black circle for seconds with printed black Arabic numerals counting by tens, from ten to sixty, around the inside edge of the small circle. Both on the smaller circle for seconds and the larger circle for hours are sets of small and wide lines, similar to the outside cover of the watch, running around the clock face denoting minutes in a repeating pattern of one wide line and four small lines. Beneath the small circle for seconds on its left and right side are printed the text reading: “SWISS   MADE”. Above the top middle of the watch face is also printed small black text of the manufacturer’s name: “CARRINGTON”. Attached by a pin to the middle of the clock face are the two black clock hands, one short and one long, and are stopped at about ’10:28′, while the small circle has a small clock hand for seconds stopped at ’28’. The chain attached to the watch is made of interlocking rings of metal and is connected the watch bow with a carabiner style clip.

The rectangular box is a leather bound wood case that is navy blue on the outside, filled with a white fabric, likely silk, on the inside of the top half and a purple velvet fabric on the bottom half. On the top of the white fabric are written in ink in the top left corner the number 602 though scratched out, and in the top right corner the number 637. In the middle of the white fabric is printed the image of the British Crown with text printed in a circular curved pattern under it reading: “BY APPOINTMENT”. Around the crown are printed in a circular framing the information of the maker reading: “CARRINGTON & CO. LTD.   130, REGENT STREET, W.” Carrington & Co. is a jeweller located in London, England and founded in 1873 and has worked on jewellery and crowns for various European monarchs, such as Queen Elizabeth II’s Dorset Bow Brooch. The company today is a subsidiary of Hancocks & Co. in London, England, makers of the Victoria Cross. The bottom half of the box is velvet with a hard raised circular ridge around an indent as an inset for the watch. On outside of box at front centre is a small push pin lock which still functions.

CSM Hawkins won the Bisley tournament’s King’s Prize in 1913, while this watch was presented in 1923. It is likely possible that this watch was presented to CSM Hawkins by The Canada Club of London, located in London, UK, where the jeweller is also located. The club was formed in 1810 and has hosted many famous figures such as Canadian Prime Ministers and British Royalty and were likely able to commission Carrington & Co., the royal jewellers, for this gold watch.
