A 3.76 inch (9.57 cm) by 2.75 inch (6.98 cm) badge with the 5 Lozenge pattern design. Came into service use in 1971. The badge comes in two parts as a buckle for the waist belt. The lozenge pattern at the bottom of the badge replaced a Scottish Buckle design. The Department of Defence had ruled that it was a Buckle of the Garter and the regiment was not entitled to wear that pattern. In return for DND agreeing to add “of Canada” to the 48th Highlanders name, the regiment agreed to adopt the lozenge design. In the 1980s, former RSM William Elms took the issue to the Lord Lyon in England and he ruled that it was a Scottish buckle. The regiment reverted to its original buckle design.
