Editing image titles, captions and file names

Introduction

When images are uploaded to the Media library on the web site, WordPress creates an “attachment” record in the WordPress database that allows for the addition of several fields of data including the “title”, “caption” and “description.” The title is automatically set to the file name of the image (minus the file name extension.)

The attachment record also contains the URL (location and filename of the image on the server) of the image file.

The caption will be shown below the image on the web site. (The system generally displays the CAPTION, not the title of each image.) The caption should completely describe the image For photos, you should include all known details: who the people are, where and when was the photo taken, the occasion, etc.

Include information about the provenance of the image in the description field.

In order to edit the title or caption of a media file, it must first be located. The most straightforward way to locate an image is to search for it in the media library. However, you can also edit an item (artifact) or a soldier and change the title and caption of attached images.

Search media library

From the dashboard, click on Media, then Library. (Detailed information on the Library screen is HERE.) With the Library in either List or Grid view, enter a search term in the search box in the upper right corner of the screen and press Enter or click Search. Select the image you want to edit, then click either the Title of the image (in List view) or the image thumbnail (in Grid view.) The image “attachment” page will open.

On the attachment page you can edit the following:

  • Title (the line at the top of the screen.)
  • Caption
  • Description
  • File name (see the file name field.)

Edit Featured image

To edit the featured images, click on the image itself. The “Edit media” screen will appear. On this screen you can:

  • Edit the title of the image (This will NOT change the file name.)
  • Add or edit the caption
  • Add some additional detail about the image

Edit Secondary images

To edit images in the “Secondary image gallery” click on the thumbnail of the image you want to edit. A small screen will appear. On this screen you can:

  • Edit the title of the image (This will NOT change the file name.)
  • Add or edit the caption
  • Add some additional detail about the image
