Davidson Sgian Dubh

Sgian Dubh of LCol John I. Davidson

An 8 inch (20.32 cm) long Sgian Dubh belonging to LCol John I. Davidson with hack pattern carved on the hilt and a Citrine stone (his birthstone) set in a silver thistle motif.

RWF embossed on the back of the hilt denoting Kilberry bagpipes as the place of manufacture.

A Sgian Dubh is a small traditional knife worn tucked into the hose (sock) with the handle visible above the right sock. Traditionally carried for utility and as part of Highland dress. Sometimes called the black knife because of the dark handle or the tradition of hidden weapons.

  • sgian = knife
  • dubh = black
  • (so literally “black knife”)

Also called “skean dhu” in English
