The medals were received separately and were mounted together for display. Also received were personal letters from Pte Dafoe, his New Testament bible and other items returned to his family.
Pte Dafoe was killed in action in the Rimini Line on 16 September 1944. The line of advance for the 48th Highlanders, was a flat plain between the Adriatic coast to their right and a prominent mountain ridge to their left. This ridge contained a German observation post, code named Kestrel, which overlooked the plain and directed artillery and other fire at the advancing Canadians.
