Prisoner of War Letter Sent Home by RSM L. E. DeHarte – September 31, 1915

Folded letter, yellow-brown piece of paper, written and sent home by RSM L. E. DeHarte while a prisoner of war in a camp Göttingen, Germany, and was folded into even quarters horizontally, with writing only on one side of the paper. In the top left of the paper is the recipients information, being his wife: “Mrs. LEDeHarte   114 Bloor St. West.   Toronto, Canada.”, and in the top right is written the location and date of: “Gottingen, Hanover, Germany, Sept.31/15”.

The contents of the letter are: “Dear Chum.- I got your letter today dated Aug 1.st, you must have made a mistake of a month. It contained  ̶a̶  snaps of Mac & My kiddies. Mac does not look so stout as she did. Jin Looks good to me you may be sure, but I do not like the way you do her hair. Little Bill does not look as if he might be starving. In fact he looks fine. I got a good snap of Bill in his car the other day. I also received $5.00  sent on the 8th Sept. So I am not badly off now. But that is the first I got & believe me I needed it. Some of the boys here got letters saying that the Can. Gov’t was paying us here so we did not need parcels money, etc. There is nobody here getting anything from the Can Gov’t or any others. Please publish that will you? How are you fixed. Hope I’ll be home soon. Yours with Love to all. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Lewis”.
