Map case used by Lt. J. M. Bowman

Khaki coloured canvas map case – 17″ wide by 13 1/2″ high; closing flap on top 17″ x 6 1/2″; 10 metal fastening domes around perimeter and edge of flap. Canvas carry handle on top centre rear of case; metal “H” down sides and across centre of rear of case; brass hook attached to carry handle.

Interior: on flap – 4 pocket/holders for grease pencils; five pencils (1 brown, 3 red, 1 black lead); pocket holder for ruler; clear, yellow plastic sheet held by canvas flaps on two sides with rope cord across centre. Plastic sheet open on top and bottom to insert map underneath.

Map “Camp Drum and Vicinity” , underneath plastic sheet, folded. Grease pencil markings in red, black and green for training exercise.

J. M. B. 57 in red ink of front of case; J. M. Bowman 48th in black ink on inside of front cover.

There is no record at the museum of when Bowman joined the 48th Highlanders in the U.K. He was designated as a 48th Reinforcement Officer in 1942, possibly cross posted from another unit in England. According to the list of “48th Overseas Officers” sent by Maj AF MacPherson in Nov 43…

“A/Maj JM Bowman was listed as Posted away from the battalion in UK and Italy. He is not shown on the lists of the 1st Battalion, 48th Highlanders, indicating that he was held at the Reinforcement Unit both in England and later in Italy.
