John Matthew Bowman of Toronto, dob 14 Aug 1885, had served in the Militia with the Cdn Army Service Corps as a Lieutenant from 31 July 1916 to 13 Dec 1917, and prior to that with the Royal Canadian Dragoons. He then enlisted in the University of Toronto Canadian Officer Training Corps (Overseas Training Company) as a private while a student and had the service number 2365644. He was in the COTC from 14 Dec 1917 to 31 Dec 1917 being released at his request to be seconded to the Imperial Army. He served with the Imperial Army until 1 Jan 1920. Bowman was appointed that same date as Lt. in the CASC.

Bowman re-enlisted in Toronto in 1939 or early 1940 for WW2 period. Museum records do not show when Bowman joined the 48th Highlanders in the U.K. He was designated as a 48th Reinforcement Officer in 1942 and is shown in a 1940 photograph with other 48th Highlanders, 1st Battalion, officers.  According to the list of “48th Overseas Officers” sent by Maj AF MacPherson in Nov 43… “A/Maj JM Bowman was listed as Posted away from the battalion in UK and Italy. He is not shown on the lists of the 1st Battalion, 48th Highlanders, indicating that he was held at the Reinforcement Unit both in England and later in Italy.
