Sgt Armstrong joined the Battalion in May 1915 and since then has continuously shown great devotion to duty and courage in the performance of same.  This NCO was especially in evidence during our operations on the Somme and when acting as Company Sergeant Major on the 26th of September when the Battalion carried out an offensive on the Enemy’s positions to the left of Courcelette.  His cheerful demeanour and brave example to his men was a a great assistance to the Company in carrying out their objective with success.

He was an inspiration to his comrades and maintained a grip of the situation during the attack and also  after in the new Front Line position in the course of consolidation.  During this time his cheerful conduct gave the men the utmost support and confidence until the Battalion was relieved.
