Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM)

In the attack of April 9th against the German positions south of Thelus this NCO accompanied the assaulting waves and established communications by wire as soon as the objective was reached.

On reaching the first German Support Trench he demonstrated great courage in clearing an enemy telephone dugout and killing the men in it, thereby preventing any more information being sent back to the enemy.

Mention in Dispatches (MID)

This NCO has distinguished himself in this Unit not only for his courageous and faithful conduct
in the performance or iis duties as a signaler throughout all the engagements which the Battalion
has taken part in, but tor his consistent attention to duty in carrying out hie work.
Sergt Bell came to France with the Battalion in February 1915 and since then has done continuous service with the Signal Section.
As a Private during the and Battle of Ypres in April 1915 he was one of the best men in the Section and through his marked sense of duty was a great help in maintaining telephone communication with the Battalion Headquarters and the Brigade, until the very last moment. Since that date he has on many occasions established telephone communication under the most trying circumstances, and during the operations on the 3rd of June 1916, under a most intense barrage of enemy artillery fire kept up communication with his advance Stations and Battalion Headquarters throughout the day. He has always been most attentive to his duties, no matter what the existing circumstances were.
