Pte WOODWARD, Robert

464395 Private Robert Woodward was a 34 year old pattern maker originally from Lancashire with pre war Militia service in the 6th Regiment (Duke of Connaught’s Own Rifles) when he attested into the 62nd Battalion in September 1915 at Vernon, BC. He was originally to be sent in a draft to the 7th Battalion in May 1916 but the order was cancelled and instead he was sent to the 15th Battalion. Private Woodward served in No. 2 Company during the June-July Hill 60 trench tours but became ill in August and was evacuated to the England for hospitalization. While there he was placed on strength of the 5th Reserve Battalion before returning to the 15th Battalion in March 1917. Woodward fought at Vimy in April and the trench tours at Arleux and Mericourt. On July 13th he became seriously ill and was evacuated to No. 30 Casualty Clearing Station where he died the following day of appendicitis.
