During a raid on the enemy trenches in the Colonne Section on March 2nd 1917, this man carried out a reconnaissance of the enemy wire and trenches for three nights previous to the raid, rutting gaps in the enemy wire and location the positions of three Machine Gun emplacements.  In every case he spent eight hours in No Mans Land on this work.  On the night of the raid this man superintended the laying of white tapes in No Mans Land after which he commanded a patrol which remained outside the enemy front line until the party entered the enemy trenches, He then rejoined the raiders and remained with the party, bombing enemy dugouts and assisting in the killing of the garrison.

On withdrawal of the raiding party Private Thornber organized a patrol which patrolled No Mans Land for wounded until day break.  His gallantry and devotion to duty was most conspicuous throughout.
