Private William Summers was a 24 year old farmer from Saskatoon when he attested into the 96th Battalion July 1916. In the UK he was sent to the 92nd battalion and from there to the 5th Reserve Battalion before being sent as a reinforcement to the 15th Battalion in April 1917 following the assault on Vimy and was posted to No. 3 Company. He participated in Hill 70, was wounded at Passchendaele in November 1917 and was in the same group of men as Private Ross who were attached to the 3rd Australia Tunnelling Company in 1918.
799558 Private Eldie Burton Ross and Private Summers were both killed in action at 10 PM on April 5, 1918 by a German 5.9 high explosive artillery shell that hit their platoon as it was leaving the Arras Caves heading for the Support Lines.
