The battalion had started another trench tour at Hill 60 on July 10th occupying trenches 39 through 41 and a Bombing Post at Trench 45. Throughout the tour the line was subjected to the usual heavy bombardment from trench mortars and danger from snipers remained constant. Four men were killed and thirty-one were wounded during the five day front line tour that ended on July 15th.
437910 Private Alfred Horace Stickland was a 32 year old store keeper originally from Southampton with 13 pre-war years service as a gun layer in the Royal Navy when he attested into the 51st Battalion in November 1915 at Edmonton. He was sent as reinforcement to the 15th Battalion in June 1916 and assigned to No. 3 Company. On July 11th Private Stickland was wounded in the left arm and leg by shrapnel and suffered a compound fracture of the leg. He died of his wounds the next day, July 12th, at No. 2 Field Ambulance and is buried in Railway Dugouts Cemetery.
