Pte STEWART, George

Originally from Morrayshire, Scotland, 446195 Private George Stewart was a 28 year old teamster when he attested into the 56th Battalion in Calgary on April 27, 1915. He was sent in a reinforcement draft to the 15th Battalion in June 1916 and was assigned to No. 3 Company. Private Stewart participated in the battles of Vimy Ridge, Hill 70 and Passchendaele before being wounded by gas in March 1918. He returned to the battalion shortly thereafter and on April 5th was wounded by the same 5.7 high explosive shell at the Arras Caves that killed Privates L D Burton Ross and William Summers. Private Stewart died of shrapnel wounds to the head six days later on April 11th at No. 2 Australian General Hospital and is buried at Wimereux Communal Cemetery.

Wimereux is one of the few CWGC cemeteries in which the headstones are not vertical and rest flat to the ground.
