437206 Private Henry Smythe was a 24 year old clerk from New York City when he attested into the 51st Battalion in May 1915 at Edmonton. He was sent as a reinforcement to the 15th Battalion in June 1916 following Observatory ridge/Mount Sorrel and assigned to No. 3 Company. He served in the July and August trench tours at The Bluff and Hill 60 and was with battalion on The Somme that Fall taking part in the battle of Ancre Heights-Regina Trench on September 26th. During the October 6-10 trench tour in Courcelette Private Lamb suffered a GSW to the head and was evacuated to the UK. Following medical treatment at 1st Western General Hospital Liverpool and the Canadian Convalescent Hospital Hellingdon House, he rejoined the battalion in February 1917 and served during the trench tour at Calonne including the Calonne Raid. He served in the March trench tours near ‘maison blanche’ and Neuille St Vaast, was at Vimy in April and the post Vimy trench tours at Farbus Wood, Arleux and Mericourt in April, May and June.
On July 7, 1917 Private Lamb suffered a GSW to the right shoulder and was evacuated to No. 1 Canadian General Hospital where he died of his wound on August 6th. He is buried in Etaples Military Cemetery.
