Pte Roe, Charles Stuart

B75244 Pte Roe, Charles Stuart enlisted with  the 48th Highlanders in Toronto.  He is not on the sailing lists we have for 1939 and 1940 so he may have sailed later or with a group from other battalions.

Pte Bain was Struck off Strength of the 48th Highlanders on 29 May 1944 and assigned to the X-4 list (4 Battalion) of the 48th Highlanders. The X-4 list is soldiers who are held as Highlanders and are available to return to the battalion when vacancies occur. In May 1944 the 48th were advancing in the Liri Valley and then breaching the vaunted Hitler Line defences at Pontecorvo, near Monte Cassino. Although our records can’t confirm he was with the battalion at that time it is quite likely as the completion of the Hitler Line battle was 23 May and the battalion moved to a rest and recovery at Piedmonte d’Alife. There soldiers would have left the regiment for health or assignments. (Service records required to confirm.)

A final entry shows him rejoining the battalion in The Netherlands and sailing with the battalion to England on 5 September 1945 as the first step in returning to Canada.
