B73930 Pte, Miller, Roy M. enlisted with the 48th Highlanders in Toronto and assigned to the 48th Highlanders CASF depot, CITC for training. He returned 24 July 1940 to the 48th Battalion for transport overseas as reinforcement. In England, he embarked with the 1st Battalion, 48th Highlanders on HM Troopship Derbyshire on 16 June 1943 at Gourock, Scotland and disembarked on the beaches at Pachino, Sicily on 10 July. Following the Sicily campaign, Miller attended the Battalion’s NCO school on 19 September 1943, qualifying Q1. He was made A/L/Cpl 7 October during the advance to take the town of Campobasso, Italy on the Adriatic coast, and confirmed L/Cpl on 8 Jan 1944 following the outflanking of Ortona by the 48th Highlanders at “Cemetery Hill”. On 7 April he was promoted to Corporal and six days later on 13 April was Struck Off Strength to the X-3 List (48th Highrs) and sent to hospital. During the January to April period the battalion was in the Arielli River area, conducting aggressive patrols into the German lines to determine their strength and positions. He was awarded to 1939-1943 Star in orders of July 1944. Miller was with the battalion in Holland in April 1945, as part of Operation Cannonshot and, following the liberation of Apeldoorn, was granted 9 days leave of absence (with allowance in lieu of rations) to the UK on 18 April 1945.
