B72747 Pte Medland, William Henry (nickname Bill) enlisted with the 48th Highlanders in Toronto in September 1939. Following training, largely on the CNE grounds with barracks in the Horse Palace, he, with the 1st Battalion, 48th Highlanders boarded a CN train on 17 December bound for Halifax. There they embarked on the Reina del Pacifico for convoy to the UK as the 1st Canadian contingent to go overseas. The disembarked at Gourock, Scotland on the Clyde on 31 December and took a train to Corunna Barracks in Aldershot. His brother, Owen John Medland also enlisted with the 1st Battalion and sailed on the Reina del Pacifico. Pte Medland was assigned to 17 Platoon, D Company and is shown in a platoon photo in April 1940.
When he left the 48th Highlanders is not recorded. Getting his service records will be required to complete the rest of his service.
