23537 Private Bernard King was a 39 year old farmer from Newcastle, New Brunswick with pre-war Militia service in the Royal Canadian Artillery when he attested into the 12th Battalion at Valcartier in September 1914. In the UK the 12th Battalion was absorbed into the 12th Reserve Battalion and Private King was transferred to the 4th Battalion serving with it at 2nd Ypres in April 1915 and Festubert in May where he was reported as Missing in Action. The details of how he was later reported as being found with the 15th Battalion are not known but he remained with the 15th serving in No. 1 Company throughout the fall-winter and spring of 1915-1916 in the Ploegsteert-Hill 60 area. On April 29th in the front line trenches near Hill 60, Private King was seriously wounded in the back and arm by shrapnel from a rifle grenade and died six days later on May 5th at No. 2 Canadian Stationary Hospital in Boulogne. He is buried in Boulogne Eastern Cemetery
