B3923 Pte Jeffries, Harvey T. was on a sailing list of the 1st Battalion, 48th Highlanders departing NWE on 4 September to the UK on 5 September 1945. He was shown as Armourer “A”. His service number indicates he enlisted in Military District 2, which covers all of northern and eastern Ontario. The most likely unit he enlisted with may be No. 2 Company RCOC (Royal Canadian Ordinance Corps). His family report he was wounded in Holland.
The sailing list in Sept 1945 is when the 48th Highlanders left from The Netherlands to the UK to begin the journey back to Canada. As we did not find an order attached to the War Diaries for The Netherlands, there are two possibilities:
. he joined up with the 48th in Holland earlier but that record is missing. This option would have him in the battles from 12 April to 25 April.
. he joined the 48th, transferred from another unit, to return to Canada with the 48th. When the war was over the 48th Highlanders sent many of the battalion home between May and September. Soldiers from other units then joined the 48th , filling those vacancies, to go home with the 48th.
His service number and the Ordinance Corps possibility fits with “Armourer A” his qualification as a specialist.
Service records required.
