Pte Edward Hayward Jaynes 9 Jun 1917 Nine Elms Cemetery

Pte JAYNES, Edmond Hayward

679267 Private Edward Hayward Jaynes was a 23 year old clerk with previous Militia service in the 2nd Battalion Queen’s Own Rifles when he attested into the 169th Battalion on January 25, 1916 in Toronto.  He was an Acting Sergeant and Instructor in the UK but reduced himself in rank to Private in order to go to the Front. He was sent in a reinforcement draft to the 15th Battalion following Vimy in April 1917 and assigned to No. 4 Company. Regrettably his time with the battalion was short as he was killed in action on June 9, 1917 while the battalion was in the front line north of Arleux in the Vimy sector. Private Haynes is buried in Nine Elms Cemetery.
