Pte James Lomax – 92nd Battalion

. 192267 Pte James Lomax enlisted with the 48th Highlanders in Toronto on 15 January 1915.  He Attested into the 92nd Battalion, 48th Highlanders, Canadian Expeditionary Force on 31 August 1915 for overseas duty, having been with the militia battalion for 5 months.

NOK:  He gave his next of kin as” mother, Mrs. Sarah Lomax at 164 Bolton Avenue, Toronto. In England he added to his pay documents and will Emily Benny living at 1374 Queen Street East in Toronto

James Lomax was born in St Helens, Lancashire, England on 18 April 1888. He sailed for England from Halifax on the SS Lapland on 27 November 1915 after training in Canada. Following more training in England he was sent to the front in France on 17 July 1916 and transferred to the 9th Brigade Machine Gun Company of the 1st Canadian Division. He was transferred to the 4th Machine Gun company on 6 November 1916. On 17 September 1917 he was sent to the Field Ambulance. Following his recovery he was transferred to the 2nd Division, MG Corps on 15 March 1918. He returned to hospital on 5 August 1918 and was sent to England on 11 August 1918. His service at the front would include The Somme and Vimy Ridge with 4 MGC and Amiens with 2nd Div MG Corps.

On 2 November 1918 he named Emily Lomax (nee Benny) as his wife, living at Homesdale Cottage Coxhead, Linton, Maidstone. He and Emily sailed back to Canada on 21 February 1919. Lomax was discharged on 25 March 1919 and the reason was medical: “kicked in knee by horse”.
