B73814 Pte Hughes, John Cavell, born 07 Sep 1915, enlisted in the 48th Highlanders and was assigned for training on 10 Jan 1940 to the 48th Training Depot. Following training Hughes embarked from Halifax on 13 may 40 arriving Liverpool on 22 May and joined the 1st Battalion, 48th Highlanders of Canada. Hughes was in Sicily and Italy receiving the Italy Star and 1939-1945 Star. After the war Hughes received the Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee medal.
