From Niagara-on-the-Lake Museum exhibit “Our Local Boys”: Robert Houghton was born in Niagara-on-the-Lake in 1895. Following the example of his older brothers, Tom and Herbert, Robert enlisted with the 134th Highlanders in January of 1916 and left for Europe in August of the same year. He transferred to the 15th Battalion and went to France in October of 1916. He was an active member of the 15th Battalion until August 15th, 1917 when he was initially reported missing with minor wounds. The report was later changed to killed in battle. His body was never recovered. Robert received the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
