Pte HEDBERG, John

204421 Private John Hedberg was an 18 year old labourer originally from Lagaja, Sweden when he attested into the 96th Battalion in March 1916 at Saskatoon. He was initially transferred to the 92nd Battalion in the UK and from there to the 5th Reserve Battalion at East Sandling Camp in January 1917. He was sent as a reinforcement to the 15th Battalion following Vimy in late April. He served in No. 4  Company during the June trench tours at Arleux and Mericourt and the July tours at Loos.

In early August the battalion was out of the line at Noeux-les-Mines and Private Hedbery accidently drowned while swimming in the tank of the generating station at Brebis at 4 PM Sunday, August 5th. He is buried in Bully Grenay Communal Cemetery British Extension
