Unit transport with one officer and 87 other ranks arrived at Sable on 15-Jun-40. Orders of evacuation of the BEF were received, this unit being ordered to Brest. There was not enough petrol to move all vehicles to the coast. L/Cpl Groves, after having driven 250 miles on a motorcycle the night before, drove a 30cwt truck 150 miles over roads congested with refugees and obtained petrol, meeting the transport at a pre-arranged meeting place on time, thus making it possible to move the vehicles to the port of embarkation. this man carried out his orders under very trying conditions.
