Pte GREENFIELD, William

77713 Private William Greenfield was a 32 year old civil engineer originally from Kent, England when he attested into the 30th Battalion in Victoria BC in November 1914. He had previous military service in the UK with the 1st Surrey Rifles and in the Canadian Militia with the 102nd Regiment (Rocky Mountain Rifles). He arrived at the 15th Battalion as part of a very large reinforcement draft from the 30th Battalion on 3 May 1915 following the battle of 2nd Ypres and served in No. 2 Company at Festubert.  He was admitted ill to an Australian Field Hospital at Wimereux in June and shortly thereafter transferred to the UK when it was discovered that he had tuberculosis. Despite treatment at Pinewood Sanitorium and several other facilities, Private Greenfield died at Ontario Military Hospital, Orpington on 22 April 1916. He is buried in Lewisham (Ladywell) Cemetery, London, England.
