Lance Corporal Terance “Terry” Fereday was born 5 March 1919 in Wednesbury, Staffordshire, England. Was Killed in action on 18 December 1943.

Terry lived in Toronto with his parents and two brothers, Bernard and Eric. He joined the Non Permanent Active Militia in 1935 and served with the 48th Highlanders until the outbreak of war in 1939. On 5 September 1939 he was called into active service and went overseas to the UK. He was part of the 48th Highlanders when they were sent to France as an Expeditionary Force and landed in Brest on 13 June 1940, but they returned to St. Marlo on the 15th again and arrived in England the next day.

In England he met a lady in Wolverhampton named Kathleen Margaret Jones. They married in February 1943.

Terry embarked for Sicily in June 1943 and headed towards the Mediterranean where he landed on the shores south of Pachino on 10 July 1943 during Operation Husky.

He was also part of the invasion of the Italian mainland and was killed on 18 December 1943 during the crossing of the Moro River during Operation Morning Glory. The exact circumstances are unknown, but it was a tough battle which the 48th fought there.

Terry was initially buried near Casa Berardi where also men from the Royal 22e Regiment were buried. He was later reburied at Moro River Canadian War Cemetery.

December 1943 turned out out to be the darkest month for the Fereday family, because the next day, 19 December, Terry’s brother Eric died in an airplane accident near Prince Rupert, BC. He was buried at the cemetary there.
