On 4. Oct 43, during the advance of the 48th Highlanders of Canada to VOLTURARA (ITALY) an enemy post on the south side of the TORRENTE LA CATOLO checked the advance.  Cpl Ellison led his section in an attack on the post and displaying great personal courage in the face of strong enemy mortar and machine gun fire during which his platoon commander was wounded. He routed the enemy with grenades and sub machine-gun, capturing their automatic machine gun.  After establishing his own section in position, Cpl Ellison went out and with the help of another man carried the Platoon Commander out of the area still being shelled to a place of safety.  Cpl Ellison’s aggressive leadership and disregard for his own safety was an inspiration to the whole platoon and the speedy destruction of the enemy post resulted in the enemy withdrawal from the Coy front and allowed the advance to continue.
