Pte Edwards, Thomas James

Pte Thomas James Edwards joined the 48th Highlanders militia, serving 2 months with the home battalion before enlisting on 03 May 1916 and was assigned the service number 225779. He enlisted in the regular army on 3 May 1916, naming his mother Agnes as next of Kin and gave his and her address as #5 Sully Crescent, Toronto. He stated his date of birth was 31 March 1898.  He was assigned to the Depot Regiment, Canadian Mounted Rifles and went to England. On 02 August 1917 he was sent to France to join the 58th Battalion. On the 19th of that month, they transferred him to return to England as they found he was underage and had misstated his dob to enlist.He left for England on 01 November 1917, then went by ship from Liverpool to Canada, embarking on 31 January 1918. In Canada he was discharged on 9 July 1918. He was with the 58th Battalion in France for fewer than 17 days. The discharge papers stated that they found him enthusiastic and mature.
