Alex Dewar followed his brothers Archie and Peter into the Pipes and Drums in 1935. On mobilization in September 1939 he volunteered for service with 1st Battalion, 48th Highlanders (CASF), service number B72752 and sailed for the UK in December 1939. Members of the band provided aid to wounded soldiers on the battlefield and were assigned to specific companies when not together as a band.
