B72881 Pte Harold Edward Cooper enlisted with the 48th Highlanders for overseas in 1939, departing Toronto with the 1st Battalion on 17 December and embarking in Halifax on the Reina del Pacifico for convoy to England, arriving on 30 December in the Clyde. During training and defence assignments in England Cooper was promoted. He is listed as Sergeant in D Company in the Sailing List to Sicily – embarked at Gourock, Scotland on 28 June 1943 on Troopship Derbyshire, landing on the beaches at Pachino, Sicily on 9 July.
