B73702 Pte Bain, Robert Alexander enlisted with the 48th Highlanders in Toronto on 12 January 1940. Following a short period of training (Some at the CNE grounds and likely the balance at Camp Borden) he was sent by train to Halifax embarking on 12 May 1940 and arriving in Liverpool on 22 May 1940. He joined the 1st Battalion, 48th Highlanders in England.
He was A/LCpl on 29 May 1943 the date he was named as Qualified Equipment Repairer Group C. He embarked with the 1st Battalion on HM Troopship Derbyshire In Gourock, Scotland, sailed for the Mediterranean, landing on the beaches at Pachino, Sicily on 10 July 1943. He was made L/Cpl effective 1 December 1943 and A/Sgt on 1 Dec 1944 (Although another record in July 1944 awarding him the 1939-1943 Star has him as A/Sgt.) He was transferred from the 48th 1st Battalion on 5 January 1944 from CIC to RCOC although he remained posted to the 48th Highlanders and was qualified Armourer Group B.
Bain was in Sicily, then Italy for the landings at Reggio, the advance to Campobasso, the advance to Ortona, crossing The Gully and then outflanking Ortona in December 1943 in which the battalion penetrated at night, unseen, several km behind German lines to the west of Ortona. He is not shown on the Sailing List from Italy to France in March 45 so appears to have left the 48th during the Italian campaign (service record details required).
