Private THOMAS, WILLIAM ALFRED

27131 Private Wiiliam A. Thomas was 28 year old copper plater originally from Warrington, England when he attested into the 15th Battalion at Valcartier in September 1914. He was serving in No. 1 Company on the extreme right flank of the battalion’s front line at 2nd Ypres when it was hit by the heaviest concentration of chlorine gas on the morning of April 24th. The company was essentially annihilated with the vast majority of its members killed, wounded, missing or taken prisoner.  Suffering from gas poisoning, Pte Thomas was captured and taken to a German medical station at Lazarette Luttic where he died of his wounds on May 4th. He is buried in Liege (Robermont) Cemetery.
