William Stephenson

Private STEPHENSON, WILLIAM

Killed in Action on 25 December 1943 at Cemetery Hill 1200 metres behind German lines, east of San Tommaso, Italy where the 48th Highlanders had penetrated with the goal to outflank Ortona and threaten the road access into and out of Ortona for the Germans.

NOK: Son of Charles Henry and Frances Stephenson, of Hamilton, Ontario. Pte Stephenson was transferred from the Royal Highland Light Infantry, to which he was assigned following basic training. He joined the 48th Highlanders, 1st Battalion in Italy in late August 1943 and participated in the advance to Campobasso, The Moro River and “The Gully” leading up to Ortona.
