John Forbes Philip was born on 29/05/1891 at Garchory, Corgarff, District of Strathdon, County of Aberdeen, Scotland. His parents were recorded as John Forbes Philip, General Merchant, and Annie nee McHardy who married 12/10/1887 at Strathdon. His father was the informant. (Statutory registers Births 240/ 18).
His father and five brothers all served during WW1. Two of his brothers were killed during the war – 1025 Lce. Corpl. George Philip, 1/6th Territorial Battalion Gordon Highlanders was killed 17/06/1915; and 17912 Corpl. Charles Forbes Philip, Royal Air Force 2nd Kite Balloon Section was killed 01/11/1918.
