Private MULVIHILL, DANIEL JOSEPH

B147317 Pte Daniel Joseph Mulvihill was killed in action on 11 December 1944 as the 1st Battalion, 48th Highlanders, expanded their bridgehead after their successful crossing of the Lamone River on 10 December. He was part of B Company, 11 Platoon at the time.

Pte Mulvihill enlisted on 25 May 1943 with the 48th Highlanders and, following training, was sent overseas. From England he was sent to Italy, arriving with the 1st Battalion, 48th Highlanders, on 12 March 1944. He was wounded in action on 23 May 1944 in the Hitler Line battle and sent to hospital. Upon rejoining the battalion he was wounded again on 18 October 1944 during the period that the battalion was chasing the Germans north from Rimini. He elected to remain on duty rather than being sent to the rear to an aide post or hospital. Following the successful assault across the Lamone River on 10 December 44 he was killed in action on the 11th.

NOK: Son of Daniel Joseph and Katherine Mulvihill, of Mount St. Patrick, Ontario, Canada.
