Originally from Dundee, Scotland, 27024 Private William Jones was 31 year old teamster when he attested into the 15th Battalion at Valcartier in September 1914. He suffered a broken leg while in the UK but rejoined the battalion in France and was in No. 2 Company at 2nd Ypres in April 1915. Jones was one the fortunate few to survive 2nd Ypres and was in action again with the battalion at Festubert in May. He was subsequently moved from No. 2 Company to the Battalion HQ Intelligence Section (scouts & snipers). The fall and winter of 1915-1916 saw the 15th Battalion in the Ploegsteert area and on April 16th it was in Brigade Reserve with its various sub-units dispersed in locations at Woodcote Farm, Bedford House, Café Belge, Chateau Dugouts and Swan Chateau.
While in reserve, units were frequently required to provide working parties for a variety of tasks in the forward lines and the 15th’s War Diary reports that these tasks were particularly heavy during this period. Two men named Jones were killed during this period one of whom was Private William Jones who was fatally wounded by shrapnel on April 17th near The Chateau. He was buried nearby at what became Bedford House Cemetery.
