CPL, COCKBURN, JAMES

During the final assault on Nissoria, Sicily. “Cpl. Jimmie Cockburn did excellent work directing the fire of a 2″ mortar and Cpl Jimmie Brannon was a great inspiration in his platoon. It was Cpls. Cockburn and Brannon who volunteered to carry out a wounded officer when it was all over.” Dileas page 287. Cpl Cockburn would be killed later in the day.

Despite occupying the objectives of the assault the battalion was withdrawn as higher echelon were not confident that the way was clear for the actual taking of the town. The subsequent attack by the brigade was preceded by a massive artillery pounding of German positions, teaching brigade command that such support was essential for future engagements.

Husband of Hannah Cockburn, of Toronto, Ontario.
