Private Dennis Carroll was a 35 year old labourer originally from Kent, England with 3 years pre-war service in the Royal West Kent Regiment when he attested into the 15th Battalion at Valcartier in September 1914. He served with No. 2 Company in St Julian during 2nd Ypres in April 1915; Festubert in May 1915; the 1915 trench tours at Givenchy, Ploegsteert Wood, Wulverghem, Hill 63 and the Messines Road; and the January – March 1916 trench tours also on the Messines Road. On March 23, 1916 he suffered shrapnel wounds to his left arm and both legs as well as a GSW to the right leg. He was evacuated to #3 Canadian Hospital Boulogne and from there to King George Hospital in the UK followed by convalescence at Moore Barracks during which he attached to a series of Reserve Battalions (92nd, 5th and 17th) before rejoining the 15th Battalion in France in late April 1917. He suffered a GSW to the left eye at Hill 70 in August, was evacuated to # 26 General Hospital and from there back to England. He spent the remainder of the war in the UK and a number of facilities and depots before being returned to Canada as medically unfit. He died of his service related injuries on January 2, 1920 and is buried in Toronto Mount Hope Cemetery
