Private BROWN, HERMAN CLIFTON

Private Herman Clifton Brown was a 21 year old Railway brakeman from Stratford, Ontario when he attested into the 15th Battalion at Valcartier in 1914. He was posted to No. 1 Company and in the cold, wet winter of 1914 1915 on Salisbury Plain he contracted what was initially thought to be bronchitis. Private Brown was not hospitalized and remained with the unit when they moved to front in France in February 1915. On March 14th when the battalion was occupying front line positions on Rue de Petillon near Fromelles, he suffered a gun shot wound to his foot and was evacuated to the UK where after further medical treatment it was discovered the bronchitis was in fact tuberculosis of the lungs. He underwent extensive treatment from the GSW and lung problem at numerous facilities in the UK until finally being returned to Canada in 1918 for treatment in a Toronto sanitorium where he died on April 4, 1918. Private brown is buried in Aurora Cemetery.
