“Major John Arthur Redmon began his military career as a soldier with the 48th Highlanders of Canada in Toronto in 1965. During his Reserve service, Major Redmon participated in NATO exercises in Germany and sovereignty exercises in the Canadian Arctic. He graduated from York University with an Honours Degree in Fine Arts, specialty in music. Though schooled as a musician and having performed as a member of the York University String Ensemble and one season with the North York Symphony Orchestra, he pursued an army career path transferring to the Regular Force. Major Redmon was commissioned in 1974. As an officer of the Royal Canadian Regiment, he has served in various capacities with the First and Second Battalions including appointments from Platoon to Company Commander. While on Regimental Duty, he completed two tours of duty in Cyprus. Major Redmon has participated in NATO and international exercises in Norway, Denmark, the UK, and Australia. His postings have taken him to the Infantry School as an instructor and various staff appointments to the Brigade, Militia Area, and National levels including Personal Assistant to the Vice Chief of the Defense Staff and, the Joint Staff at national Defence Headquarters. major Redmon was appointed commanding Officer, the Ceremonial Guard in August 1998. Upon relinquishment of command of the Ceremonial Guard, Major Redmon is posted to National Defence Headquarters, Military Training and Assistance Programme as the Chief Instructor, Caribbean Junior Command and Staff Course. He is married to the former Leslie Howard from Ottawa. They have two children, Rachael and John.
