Born on December 30, 1903, in St. Stephen, New Brunswick, he pursued higher education at the Royal Military College and Osgoode Hall, leading to a legal career in Toronto.  

Military Career:

•Early Service: Ganong served as the adjutant of the 48th Highlanders of Canada at the onset of World War II. In June 1940, he was a company commander during the planned Second British Expeditionary Force to France, which was ultimately aborted.  

•Leadership Roles: By March 1942, Ganong had advanced to the Canadian Corps headquarters staff. Demonstrating commitment, he reverted in rank to replace Lieutenant-Colonel Bill Hendrie as the commanding officer of the 1st Battalion, 48th Highlanders (Canadian Active Service Force). He held this position until December 1942.  

•Brigade Command: In 1944, Ganong was appointed commander of the 4th Canadian Infantry Brigade. His leadership was recognized in the London Gazette on April 4, 1946, where he was listed among notable Canadian military figures.  

•Post-War Service: After World War II, Ganong continued his association with the 48th Highlanders of Canada, serving as their commanding officer from 1945 to 1946. He subsequently commanded the 5th Canadian Infantry Reserve Brigade from 1946 to 1949.  

Personal Life:

While specific details about his family life are limited, he hailed from a prominent family in St. Stephen, New Brunswick. The Ganong family is renowned for establishing Ganong Bros., a notable confectionery company.  

James Edwin Ganong passed away in Toronto, 16 March 1970.
