Lt. Stewart Reburn joined the 2nd Battalion, 48th Highlanders in Toronto and is shown in a 1940 newspaper article as one of the 52 officers of the 2nd Battalion who were training for service in the Second World War. He joined the 1st Battalion as a reinforcement officer in Italy, prior to the December 1943 advance towards Ortona. On 18 December the battalion successfully outflanked The Gully in Operation Morning Glory. As a last action patrols were sent to both open flanks. Lt Reburn, in the Baker Company patrol toward and ending the isolation of Casa Berardi, was wounded in the ankle which “saw the end of his skating career” as recorded in the regimental history Dileas . He was taken into the R.A.P. of the Van Doos.
