Lt Sandford Galt Smith

Lieutenant Sanford Galt Smith came to 1st Battalion 48th Highlanders of Canada on 8-Dec-44.  While attending University of Toronto Cadet Smith was a member of the Canadian Officers Training Corps (COTC) and qualified as an Artillery officer.  Also, while working as a miner in South Africa he served in the 8th Transvaal Regiment.  Having qualified as an Artillery officer he applied for active service and continued training and qualified as an Anti-Aircraft Artillery officer serving with 7 Light Anti Aircraft (LAA) Regiment.  In Oct 44 his request to transfer to the Infantry was approved.  He joined the Highlanders in Italy on 8-Dec-44 and was killed in action during the battles on the Lamone River on 16-Dec-44.
